Obituary of Capt. Nicholas J Egich, USAF

Nicholas St. James Egich, age 29, passed away June 26, 2020. He is survived by his loving parents, Sharon and Douglas, his wife, Elizabeth, and his daughter, Avaline. Nicholas was born December 9, 1990 in Ipswich, Suffolk England. Nick was a compassionate, musically gifted, and, most importantly, hilarious addition to his community. His unique individuality made an impact that was not limited to any national or continental boundaries.  From an early age, Nick’s peers admired him.  Nick graduated from AFNORTH International High School in Heerlen, Netherlands, which directly affected his worldview, and later his choice of career. He enjoyed traveling and valued learning new cultures and ideas. This outlook led Nick to the University of Georgia where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Affairs.  After graduation, he commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. During his time at UGA, Nick quickly gained a reputation as an avid exerciser, a dedicated mentor, and a loyal friend. This reputation followed him later in life and continually inspired those around him.

On December 14, 2013 Nick married his soulmate, Elizabeth.  From there “loving husband” and later, “amazing father” were added to his titles. As his career began, his hard work and tenacity were recognized by peers and leadership alike.  This was particularly true when he deployed to Afghanistan, where his intellect and attention to detail were paramount. His list of awards and commendations include: the NATO Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Achievement Medal for Outstanding Achievement for his contributions during Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL.  It was at this time that Nicholas authored a 30-page Special Operations Forces standard operating procedure, directly impacting the protection of existing Air Mobility Division assets. Personally and professionally, Nicholas continually strived to be better.  He maintained a mindset of continual growth and learning. It was this drive led him to shine as an Air Force officer, friend, family man, and human being.
