Obituary of Carmen De La Torre

Acelia del Carmen de la Torres, ninety-eight year-old long-time resident of Warner Robins, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 surrounded by loved ones. Carmen was known to many is “Mima” andloved by her church family and those who crossed her path for her infectious smile, kindness, generosity, and spirit of encouragement.

Carmen was born to Generosa and Manuel de la Torres in Havana, Cuba. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband David Fernandez, her sister Cristina Fernandez and her daughter Ada Fernandez.

Carmen immigrated to the United States by way of Madrid, Spain in August 1968, with her daughter Ada Fernandez. Ada was called by the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board (formerly Home Mission) and Georgia Baptist Mission Board to minister to Hispanics in Columbus and later Warner Robins and Middle Georgia in 1982. Carmen served faithfully alongside her daughter for thirty-three years until Ada’s death. Carmen could be found welcoming and praying with others, driving with Ada to all corners of Georgia or traveling throughout the United States to speak on their ministry to Hispanics in Middle Georgia. If there was a language barrier, she was ready with hand signals, a smile, and her testimony of “Jesus loves you” to all whom she met. After Ada’s untimely death, Carmen continued her ministry to others as a member of the Warner Robins Templo Bautista Hispano. Despite the language barriers, Carmen never met a stranger. She happily resided at Summer’s Landing Independent Living for the last 12 years, where she enjoyed her self-sufficient life style. Our dear Mima will be missed by many. Services in her honor will be held at the Templo Bautista Hispano 1306 Feagin Mill Rd Warner Robins, GA on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 2:00PM. She will be interred at Parkway Memorial Gardens following the service.
