Jackie Hamilton

Obituary of Jackie Morris Hamilton

Jackie Lea Hucks Morris Hamilton, 92, of Byron, slipped peacefully from this life early in the morning of May 26th following several months of steadily declining health. She was well attended by the care-givers at The Oaks in Marshallville and the Heart of Georgia Hospice throughout her last illness. She had a very long and vibrant life. All are welcome to gather with us to remember her in a Celebration Ceremony on Wednesday, June 14th, 2023 in the chapel at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home in Warner Robins. The family will be available there for visitation at 9 am with a service to follow at 10 am.

Jackie was born on September 25, 1930, in High Point, NC, the eldest of 6 children born to Leon and Pauline Hucks. She spent her growing up years in and around the Carolinas and Virginia. She graduated from Altavista High School in Altavista, Virginia, then acquired a secretarial certificate from Pan American Business College in nearby Richmond. For the next 4 years she was employed as a personal secretary at the Lindsay Robinson Feed and Seed while living at home until her marriage in 1953 to the late R.O.(Dick) Morris. They moved around the southeast for a number of years, welcoming 4 sons along the way before settling in the Stone Mountain, Ga. area from 1966 to 1991. During this time, Jackie committed her life to Jesus Christ and fulfilled a calling to lead a Ladies Bible Study from her home; and so began a lifelong ministry of presenting the gospel message to women who came from multiple church affiliations and all corners of her community to hear her gifted teaching. In 1991, seeking a place to retire, they came to Byron and made it home. She continued her legacy of investment in women through Bible teaching, counseling, mentoring, and friendships—particularly among the congregation of her home church, Byron United Methodist. Jackie’s faith was the defining characteristic of her life and she possessed a rare aptitude for encouraging others to discover their own victorious walk.

As her health/mobility began to decline in advanced age, she lived a year at Kingsford of Warner Robins. Then in October 2020, she moved to The Oaks in Marshallville. Here she came to know and love Howard Hamilton, her neighbor across the hallway—and at the age of 90 they surprised everyone by marrying! They had a church wedding with televised coverage of their love story.

Preceded in death by her parents and sister Jill Craven of Greensboro, NC, Jackie is survived by her husband, Howard Hamilton, sisters Pat Moore, of Asheboro, NC and Diane (Charles) Bennett, of Supply, NC; brothers Ronnie (Hilda) Hucks, of Greensboro, NC, and Terry (Heidi) Hucks, of Chester, Va.; 4 sons and their wives: Kent and LaDonna Morris of Pine Mountain, Ga., Alec and Merry Morris of Lucas, Texas, Kirk and Susan Morris of Byron, and Hugh and Jerri Morris, also of Byron; 13 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren. She will be missed and mourned by those who knew her as a woman of excellence, one who opened her heart and home to many in need of counsel and hope; an inspiration to countless others by her faithful devotion to God in whose arms she now rests.
