Catherine Holt

Obituary of Catherine "Susan" Holt

Born March 25, 1948, at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi.   The second of 5 daughters, Susan grew up as a child of a US Air Force pilot.  She traveled the country and spent 1958 thru 1960 overseas, first in Japan and then Okinawa.  The trip to Japan was one of the last where military families traveled via a US Naval vessel and the Walters docked in Tokyo, Japan, having traveled on the USS General Funston.   The return trip home was unsettling as the DC 6 the family was on lost two engines and had to make an emergency landing at Wake Island for repairs.

While in Okinawa, the family acquired Mitzi, a Siamese cat that became Susan’s beloved pet of many years and started her lifelong love of felines.  Cats, Christy, Melissa and Strippy along with dogs Missy and Rosie were a few of her favorite companions.

Susan decided to make a career as an educator, graduating from Middle Tennessee University in 1970.  She began her career in Little Rock, Arkansas, transferred to Perry, Mississippi before landing a teaching position in Fulton County, Georgia at S. L. Lewis Elementary school.  Susan then transferred to the Houston County school system serving at Perry Elementary, Perry Primary, Bonaire Elementary and David Perdue Elementary.  In her 39 ½ years of teaching, she touched the lives of thousands of young children in the classroom, afterschool, as a tutor, and as a Sunday School and Bible school teacher at Andrew Global United Methodist Church.

Susan married her husband Ron and became an instant part time mom, to Shona, Tammy, and Angie. Their family quickly grew with the birth of Ronald James, Jr. (Jim) and Jennifer.  Susan dearly loved her children often sacrificing herself to nurture, provide, guide and care for them.  She frequently welcomed others into her home treating them as her own.  Susan enjoyed reading and made incredible Cherry Cream Cheese Pie.  She will be remembered for her loving kindness, gentle spirit, quiet strength, patience, fortitude, tenacity, and most of all her accepting and generous heart.

Susan is preceded in death by her husband, Ronald James Holt Sr.; grandson, Turner Holt Jonson; parents: Lt. Col Hiram Atwood Walters and Eleanore (Ehrt) Walters; and sister, Linda Kay (Walters) Lynch.

Susan is survived by her children: Ronald James “Jim” Holt, Jr. of Houston county and Jennifer Holt Burke (Joe) of Twiggs county; step-children; Shona Holt Jonson (David) and Tammy Holt Baker (Jonathan) of Henry county, Angie Holt Lester (Shane) of Lamar county; 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; sisters; Christine Walters of Lexington, Kentucky,  Annette Walters Christensen (George) of Fayette county, and Lori Walters Vermillion (Russ) of Henry county; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
